The Weekly Newsletter for Heart of Houston Birth and Wellness Families
Happy Valentine's Day
Happy Monday friends! While many of you were jamming to Dre, Snoop and the original Queen B (fight me), we were welcoming a tiny little girl into the arms of her adoring family. Both grandmothers held and supported this mama through her labor and I'm pretty sure we all shed a few tears; it was a beautiful birth. The amount of love in that room was immeasurable. We hope that you are able to take a moment today to show appreciation to the people that make you the happiest. All of us here at Heart of Houston want you to know how much we love you!
Over the weekend
We had great turn out for this weekend's events. Joanna will continue to offer Dance and Stretch classes every first and second Saturday of each month. Topics change each class so be sure to check out the event pages for more details.
Zoie Drake with Bloom and Grow Classes had really sweet activities for the the littles that attended the Love Bug workshop. We are looking forward to offering more classes with Zoie when we move into our new space!
Family Spirituality
I'm a preacher's kid. Shocking, I know. I was raised in a very conservative home where Sundays were for church but the lessons were daily. As an adult, my beliefs have evolved from religion to spirituality that include the traditions and ceremonies of my Mexican roots, much of which I was not taught about as a child. Recently our kids have been asking big questions about God and we've had some really fun discussions. The three year old goes to a faith based pre-school and enjoyed pointing out the baby Jesus, or lack thereof, in nativity scenes around town during Christmas break. The six year old was more concerned with a lack of labor support for Mary. I'm SO curious to see how their views evolve over time.
This week HOH member Sarah Monk wrote to recommends two books on the topic of spirituality. Sarah writes, "If the topic of children's books on spirituality ever comes up, here are two book suggestions. Old Turtle by Douglas Wood and Mother God by Teresa Kim Pecinovsky. Old Turtle is one I had in my preschool classroom in both Boston and San Francisco. Mother God will be released soon! The latter has a more Judeo-Christian centric theme since it derives from Torah and Biblical scripture. In my nanny, teaching and caregiving work with families of all blends, most of us were from different backgrounds and English was a second language for at least one of the parents or grandparents. There was still a thread present about universal love and abiding by the rhythms of nature"
Thanks for the recommendations, Sarah! I've pre-ordered Mother God for my girls.
