The Mostly Weekly Newsletter for Heart of Houston Birth and Wellness Families and Friends
Perfectly Ripe!
Y'all, how adorable is this little guy in his avocado hat and tortilla blanket?! While many of you were probably chowing down on BBQ on Memorial Day, our team was welcoming two little ones! One was born here at the birth center and the other at Texas Children's Pavilion for Women. The coolest part? They were born three minutes apart! Welcome to the world sweet babies, we are so glad you're here.
This past weekend was our HOH Family Reunion and summer kick-off party. The weather was perfect for the kiddos to play in the splash-pad and for the parents to sit in the shade and catch up. We had a few of our expectant couples come and we were SO happy to finally meet our Whole Heart Collective twin girls, Alice and Ellie! Up next for our family events is a Baby Pool Party Friday June 23rd 10-12pm.
Awkward!
On Sunday we had another great Comfort Measures class. You already know this is my favorite class to teach. I love watching folks try new things! We set up six relaxation stations around the lobby and community room and folks rotate stations to find what works for them. The truth is there is a lot of laughter, a few inappropriate jokes (surprisingly, not all from me) and always, a few tears are shed. This class is often taken by folks in their final trimester so the anticipation of their big day has been building up for months, sometimes years. As a society we are sometimes so eager to move on to the next thing we forget to stop and just relish the current moment. This is a chance to slow down and physically connect with your partner as you prepare to take on this monumental task together. What you enjoy in class you might HATE in labor but this class will give your support person/people a toolbox full of ideas to support you at every stage of labor.
Our next Comfort Measures Core Class is Wednesday June 7th at 6pm. RSVP here
Celebrating Diversity
June is Pride Month! This year we are celebrating the incredible diversity in the families we serve. Houston has the 11th largest population of LGBTQIA+ adults and folks, we are having babies! Along with pregnancy and postpartum care, we also offer gender affirming well-person care and we are so excited to now offer conceptions assistance services!
Last December our Clinical Director and Co-Founder, Mary Love completed her training with midwife and author of the book Queer Conceptions, Kristin Kali. We are excited to now offer both IUI and ICI (intrauterine and intracervical insemination) for folks needing conception assistance. Like Kali's practice Maia Midwifery and Fertility, "We hold each parent’s experience as important, valid and unique. Maia embraces all families formed with intention and love, and we honor the commitments forged within all constellations of family."
Houston's growing LGBTQIA+ community deserves holistic, trauma-informed care when intentionally building their family. We will also continue to offer opportunities for queer families in Houston to connect and build lasting connections with our ongoing Queer Parenting support circles and playdates. Visit our table at this year's Houston's Family Pride Festival on Saturday June 17th from 4-8pm for more information or shoot us an email!
